So I was googling “why do men grow beards” out of curiosity (the answer is basically “we don’t know” or “testosterone”) and as I was typing “men” into Google Chrome I noticed the two suggestions it gave me and got curious about them, so I went to look at the full suggestion lists on the main Google page, as well as seeing what came up for women, and also, for comparison, I threw in all the gender neutral words I could think of which fit the wording. Which isn’t many because the English language sucks and my vocabulary is spotty at best.

The result is a surprisingly apt metaphor for sexism in society. Consider that all but a few of the gender neutral pronouns are about biology, the exceptions being easter eggs, cats, self harm, and Margaret Thatcher (and possibly smoking depending on interpretation). Men have two sexist results, especially the implication that all men are rapists, but half are still biology-related, hence more neutral. All of the female results can be interpreted as sexist. The clothes-related questions are less like this, but they’re distinctly different from all the others. It’s also odd that both men and women are labeled cheaters, but there is no “why do people cheat” anywhere, implying that the searchers think cheating is exclusive to that gender, or that for some bizarre reason gender would affect someone’s reasoning.

Not sure entirely what to make of this other than what I’ve mentioned, but I thought I might as well share it.
